Reading &
Spelling Program

This summer program at Ability KC will address vowel patterns to improve each child’s reading and spelling abilities. It is developed for children ages 7-10 who have difficulty with reading after a neurologic event such as a stroke or brain injury. This program will be based on the “Words Their Way” curriculum and skills for word patterns. A new vowel and its patterns will be introduced each week and practiced within themed activities to help engage and motivate each child. In addition, homework will be provided each day for practice at home.

Developing your child’s reading and spelling by learning:

Less common long vowel patterns
Ex: The long “I” in find

Short and long vowel sounds.

Dipthongs (Ex: oi) and other ambiguous vowel sounds.

Patterns of short and long vowel words with silent “E”.

“R” influenced vowel patterns
