Specialized Summer Programming

With more than 10 years of experience using constraint and bimanual training interventions, Ability KC’s experts have designed unique summer programming for constraint and bimanual training. Using constraint and bimanual training interventions, children with hemiparesis are encouraged to use their affected arm that has been impacted by a neurological event such as a stroke or brain injury. By placing a removeable cast on the non-affected upper extremity while using the affected limb to complete repetitive, goal-oriented activities children are able to achieve greater long term use of both hands and arms.

In age groups of 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-13, children will participate in group activities customized to be fun and motivating in our Intensive Constraint & Bimanual Therapy Program. Children will wear their constraint for 22 hours per day for 2-3 weeks while participating in group activities as well as daily activities. Once the constraint is removed, groups will practice bimanual skills for an additional 1-2 weeks. Together, these evidence-based practices will help improve the function of both upper extremities when working together.

To meet the needs of children as they age and become more active in hobbies, sports and their community, Ability KC has introduced Interest Based Constraint Group Therapies for adolescents ages 14-18. Building on their current skills, adolescents will work to improve their strength, endurance, coordination and fine motor skills over two weeks while wearing a constraint. These skills will help each participant build basic functional achievements that will support them when participating in complex daily skills and maximize the use of their affected limb. In collaboration with community experts in each field of interest Ability KC helps adolescents confidently engage in new activities that promote independence, health, creativity and connectedness.
