Specialized Summer Programming

Using constraint and bimanual training interventions, Ability KC’s pediatric team encourages children with hemiparesis to use their affected arm that has been impacted by a neurological event such as a stroke or brain injury. This is achieved by placing a cast on the non-affected upper extremity and completing repetitive, goal-oriented activities to encourage the use of your child’s affected limb.

After 1-3 weeks of wearing the constraint, groups will participate in bimanual training for an additional 1-2 weeks. Together, these evidence-based practices will help improve the function of both upper extremities when working together. Each group activity is customized to be fun and motivating to support you child in reaching their goals.

For the greatest success, your child must be able to participate in group activities, commit to 2-3 weeks of arm constraint and wear their cast for a minimum of 22 hours per day.
